Dean's old phone lives in the drawer under the kettle, in with the fuses and the takeaway menus and a screwdriver that does not fit anything in the house.
He keeps it for the photographs. Everybody has one of those drawers and everybody says the same thing about why.
It takes the best part of an hour on the charger before it will show him a screen at all, and then it comes up green and slow with two hundred and nine notifications from four years ago, and he thumbs straight past every one of them.
What he was actually after was a voice note.
His mum's birthday, four years back. Twenty seconds. Him singing the first two lines of happy birthday badly and then saying something daft about the state of the cake.
He took it up to the bench at the top of the park to play it, because that is where he eats his lunch, and because he did not want to play it in the flat.
He pressed it once.
And here is what he expected. He expected to hear a stranger. He expected the voice on that recording to sound like a bloke he used to know and had lost touch with, because that is more or less what everybody has been telling him since March.
His sister said it in the car park after Easter. She said, you are not the same man, Dean. She meant it kindly and she meant it entirely.
His foreman said it in front of two other lads, which for a foreman is enormous.
And his daughter, who is fifteen and does not give compliments away, said, you are just not like you were.
Three people, all of them in his corner, not one of them lying.
So he sat on a bench with a cheese and pickle roll going soft in his lap and played twenty seconds of himself from four years ago.
And what he heard was Dean.
Same voice. Same jokes. Same little cough before the punchline. The same man, exactly, doing exactly what he would do this afternoon if it were his mum's birthday this afternoon.
He played it again to be sure.
And that is when the thing he has been half thinking since March arrived properly, in whole words, on a bench, at ten past one. It went like this: they are all being very kind, and none of them are lying, and none of it took.
Six years he has been out of it. Six. And he cannot find, from the inside, one single gram of difference.
And here is where I stop talking about Dean.
Because somebody said it to you as well, recently, and they meant it. And you went looking for it, honestly, wanting it to be there.
And you came back with nothing.

The made thing does not get a vote
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10
The word Paul reaches for in Ephesians 2:10 is poiema, which is where the English word poem comes from. It means a made thing, an object that came out of somebody's hands with their intention still in it. And here is the part that matters on a bench at ten past one: a poem cannot read itself. You are His workmanship, made rather than merely improved, and the Holy Spirit is holding that sentence over you while you go hunting for evidence you were never issued with.
You have been told, gently and by people who love you, to stop arguing and take their word for it. I am not going to tell you that, and neither does Scripture. 1 Samuel 16:7 knocks the legs out from under the whole idea of anybody's eyes being the instrument: man looks on the outward things, the Lord looks on the heart. Not only your eyes. Theirs as well. Your sister is a good woman and she is not qualified either, and the Spirit is not asking you to swap her reading for yours and call it settled.
So there are two instruments in the room and neither of them can do this job. Yours reads nothing at all. Theirs reads something and cannot say what. You are being read, right now, by a better one than either, and that is what 1 John 3:20 is for when it says that whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything. Greater than. Not kinder than, not louder than. Greater, as in a longer reach and a finer gauge, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that verse from flattening into a nice thought.
Now look at the verb again, because everything hangs off it. Created. Not being created, not scheduled for creation, not somewhere in a queue. Created, done, over the shoulder, finished before it was described. Whatever God has made of you was made, and six years of not feeling it has not put a mark on it, and His Spirit is saying that into a lunch hour on a hill.
The Holy Spirit is doing something in you at this minute that you have no instrument for, and the ground under that is Philippians 1:6, where Paul is confident of exactly one thing and it is not the reader's progress. He is confident that the One who began a good work carries it through Himself. Began. He started it. You were not consulted at the beginning and you are not being consulted now, and on a day like this that is the best news on the page.
Psalm 139:16 says His eyes saw your unformed substance, and that the days made for you were written in His book when as yet there was not one of them. Written down before you had a face. So the report that actually counts was filed long before you were in any position to feel a thing about it, and the Spirit has never once asked you to countersign it.
And notice what is not happening anywhere in that verse. Nothing is being measured. There is no rate you have fallen behind, no quantity of change you were meant to be able to detect by now, no scoreboard anywhere in Ephesians 2. Workmanship is a noun. It is not a score, and His Spirit has never handed anybody a percentage.
Here is the turn.
You have been trying to audit a piece of work from inside the work, and that is not a failure of attention and it is certainly not thin faith. It is a category mistake, and every made thing makes it, which is exactly why Ephesians 2 puts the verdict in the Maker's mouth and the Holy Spirit keeps it there.
The change in you is not a feeling you failed to notice. And it is not your sister's word that you are supposed to lean on instead. It is a fact about a made object, and the only one standing in a position to speak to it is the One whose hands it came out of, and He has already spoken: created in Christ Jesus, for good works, prepared beforehand.
So you can stop taking the reading. There is nothing wrong with your instrument. It was never the instrument.
And if it has not been six clean years, if last night went the way the old nights went, then read this next line before anybody else does. Ephesians 2:10 does not say we are His workmanship on our good weeks. Nothing in it is a report on your run, and the Holy Spirit did not begin the good work on a day you passed and does not put the tools down on a day you did not.
You were made in Christ Jesus. It happened. It is not waiting on your permission, your evidence, your sister, your foreman or your fifteen year old, and it did not come off in the night. The word says prepared beforehand, and beforehand is the whole comfort of it, and the Spirit is pressing it into a man on a bench with a roll going soft in his lap.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your hand over your heart. The authority to speak over a work you cannot inspect is not something you have to generate: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His name rather than out of your own supply. Speak it, keep the hand where it is, and leave what you feel and when you feel it entirely to Him, in His timing and however He answers. Ephesians 2:10 is the ground under these words and the Holy Spirit is what carries them.
- Voice note from four years ago, you are a recording and you are not a verdict. The word says I am God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, and a made thing does not get a vote on its own making. I am putting that phone back in the drawer.
- Suspicion that none of it took, you are not the truth about me, and in the name of Jesus you do not get my afternoons. First Samuel 16 says man looks at the outward things and the Lord looks at the heart, and He is not squinting. I am the same man to my own ear and a new creation to His.
- Jesus, You call me Your workmanship and You made me in Yourself for good works You had ready before I ever picked anything up. Your Holy Spirit is telling my hand where to sit while I say this, and my hand is over my heart. The change is Yours, it is real, and it holds today.
