The mattress dips in two places and she only ever lies in one of them.
Eight inches. She has never put a tape measure to it and she knows it exactly: from the piping at the edge of the mattress to where the sheet turns cold. One arm hangs off the side most nights. In the morning the far pillow sits exactly as she left it, because for eleven months she learned to sleep on the rim of that bed the way a nurse sleeps in a chair.
She slept there so she could be up in one movement. She slept there so the rail could come down without waking him. She slept there because she had learned to hear the difference between the two kinds of breathing, and she got so good at it that she could hear it while asleep.
Nobody needs her at three in the morning now. There is no rail. No jug on the side table, no folded towel over the back of the chair, no little pot of swabs. The room has been repainted a color she chose herself.
And she still sleeps in eight inches.
She has bought new sheets twice. She makes that bed properly, hospital corners, both sides pulled tight, and then she gets into it on the right hand edge like a woman waiting for a bell.
Two winters of that.
Then one night in the spring she woke at ten past three, which is what she does, and lay in the dark listening for a sound that has not existed for two years. And she understood something she had been declining to understand. Nothing was coming. Not that night. Not the next one. The listening was not keeping anybody alive. It was simply what her body did now, and it had outlived its reason by twenty four months, and in all that time not one person had told her she was allowed to stop.
So she lay there and did the bravest arithmetic of her life. She moved one hand. Six inches, into the cold part of the bed. She left it there, and she cried, and she did not move any further that night, and she went to sleep with her hand in the middle of her own bed.
You know about the eight inches. You did not need me to measure them for you.

The night nobody told you was over
Plainly, before anything else: nothing here is measuring you. Nobody is about to tell you that two years is long enough, or that a woman in your position ought to be sleeping in the middle by now, or that there is a stage you should have reached. That accounting has been running in your own head without any help from me, and I would not hand you a schedule if I had one, because there is not one and anybody who says otherwise is guessing out loud.
Here is a sentence from the book of Joshua that most people read straight past, because it sits at the end of four chapters of place names and nobody is concentrating by then.
And the Lord gave them rest on every side, according to all that He swore to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood before them. The Lord gave all their enemies into their hand.Joshua 21:44
Read what it does not say. It does not say things had gone quiet for a while. It does not say they had taken enough ground to relax a little and see how it went. It says rest, on every side, given, past tense, finished, on the strength of a promise older than every person standing in that land.
Joshua 21:44 says He gave them rest. Gave. Not lent, not offered on terms, not held back for a better year. And the Holy Spirit is pressing that same finished word into a woman lying on eight inches of her own mattress at ten past three: you are at rest on every side already, and every side means the cold side too.
That watch you kept was not a fault and it was not a nervous habit. It was love doing a job. For eleven months a body learns a job so completely that it goes on doing it long after the job has ended, the way a hand still reaches for a light switch in a house you moved out of years ago.
I have no standing to tell you to put your hand into the cold half of that bed. The written word does, and it does not hedge itself: rest on every side, handed over before anybody had the feeling to match it. His Spirit is what carries a sentence like that the last six inches into a body that has stopped believing sentences. You are off duty. That was decided by somebody with a great deal more authority than me.
Notice the order in that verse, because it is the reverse of the order you've been living by. The people did not achieve the quiet and then earn permission to enjoy it. The rest was given, and after that the fighting simply stopped being theirs to do.
That is not my opinion about your bedroom. That is what the Spirit has been saying through Joshua 21:44 for two years while you filed it away as a nice verse about a nation and not about a mattress. You have rest already. The eight inches are a habit your body kept, and a habit is not a sentence handed down by a court.
The listening that outlived its reason
If you are reading this in a house where the emergency has not ended, where the rail is still up in the front room and the jug still gets filled twice a day, nothing here asks you to stand down from a watch that is still real. Keep listening. That is love and it is not neurosis. What follows is for whenever the room goes quiet, and it will hold then exactly as it holds now, because the rest in that verse was never a prize for having got through something.
Somebody told you kindly that it takes about two years. Scripture carries no clock of that kind anywhere in it, and the Holy Spirit has never once stood over a widow with a stopwatch. What is written is that the rest was given on every side, and every side takes in the far edge of a double bed in a repainted room. You are not behind.
The Holy Spirit is doing one small thing in that room tonight, and it is not a large or dramatic thing. He is standing on Joshua 21:44 and telling a tired body that it can stop listening now. You are held while you sleep. You were held on every night you lay awake doing the listening, and not one of those nights depended on you being awake to make it true.
You have been told that moving over would be a step, and a step is a thing somebody asks you to take. This is not that. Joshua 21:44 hands over something already finished, and His Spirit is what makes a finished thing feel like it belongs to the person holding it: you have the whole width of that bed, and you have had it the entire time you were lying on the rim.
So here is the turn, and it is a small one, on purpose, because you're tired and a large one would only be another demand from another person who does not live in your house.
Move one hand.
Not the whole of you. Not tonight, not on a timetable, not as a test of anything. Just take one hand off the edge and lay it in the cold part of the bed, and leave it there, and let your body find out what your God settled a long time ago: nothing is coming that He is not already awake for.
The rest was given on every side. Every side includes the side of the bed you've kept cold as a kind of loyalty, and loyalty was never what He asked of you there.
Feeling rested is weather. The giving is the climate, and it does not turn.
Declare this over yourself
None of this is you talking yourself into something. The authority in these three lines is Christ's, and it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, given to you rather than built up by you at ten past three in the morning. Speak them under His will and not your own, and however He answers, leave the outcome with Him. Joshua 21:44 is the ground the words stand on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes them off a page and into a dark room.
- Eight inches at the edge of this bed, you are not my post and you have not been my post for two years. The Lord gave rest on every side, and every side of this bed includes the half I keep cold. I take the whole width of it tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Guilt that says moving over is forgetting, you are a liar and you have no place in my bed. I loved him at the edge of this mattress and I love him in the middle of it, and the Lord who gave rest on every side is not counting inches. I lie down whole tonight.
- Lord, You gave rest on every side and You never once made me earn an inch of it. You held this house on every night I lay awake listening, and You are holding it tonight while I sleep. I put my hand in the cold half and leave the rest of it with You.
