The Arrow Cut Into the Brick

This message is for I am not in trouble and I am not anywhere either, because in four years I have never once let myself count this address as mine

Colm had gone round that corner four times a day for eleven years, and he had never once looked at it below eye level.

The woman in the yellow jacket was crouched right down at the foot of the chemist's wall with her thumb on the brick, and there was a tripod folded against the drainpipe beside her, and she was not looking at the road at all, which is the only reason he stopped.

She showed him without being asked twice. Cut into the stone at about knee height, half filled with old paint and worn shallow by seventy winters of shoes and rain, was a horizontal bar with an arrow underneath it, the point of the arrow aimed straight up into the bar.

A cut benchmark. The corner of that building is a fixed point. Its height above the sea is written down in a record, and for a very long time every level taken in that part of the town was run from it: the fall on the drains, the height of the doorsteps, the floor of the hall two streets over. Half a mile of a town measured from a scratch on a chemist's corner that nobody has looked at since the war.

Colm asked how a corner gets chosen for that.

She said somebody came along with a chisel and cut it, because the corner was solid and because it was there. That was the whole of the selection process.

And then she said the thing Colm has repeated to people ever since, which is that the brick does not know. It has no opinion about it. It has never been consulted, never agreed to anything, never had a moment of deciding to be a fixed point. It has been one the entire time, whether anybody was reading it or not.

You have an address.

Four years now, the first one with your own name on the lease, and by every measure a person could name there is nothing wrong. Nobody is chasing you. Nothing is on fire. The rent goes out, the boiler works, the neighbor two doors down says hello.

And you have never once counted it.

You notice it in the small words. You say the flat. You say my place at the moment. You say where I am living, which is a phrase nobody uses about a home. There is a form somewhere with your mother's address on it because that felt more permanent, and you have never registered with a dentist here, and the four boxes from the last move are still stacked against the wall behind the door, and when somebody asks if you are settled you say, honestly, that you are not really anywhere.

Not in trouble. Just not anywhere.

The Arrow Cut Into the Brick

The eyes that were on this ground before you got here

There is a sentence in Deuteronomy about a piece of land, and the strange thing about it is who the sentence is about.

Moses is describing the country the people are walking into. He has spent a while contrasting it with the one they left, where the water had to be carried and pedalled up out of the river by hand. This new ground drinks rain. And then, having said that, he says something that is not about the people at all.

But the land you are crossing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, that drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land that the Lord your God cares for. The eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.Deuteronomy 11:11-12

Read the grammar slowly, because it is doing something quietly enormous. The eyes are not on the people. The eyes are on the ground. The care is not described as directed at the settlers and their attitude to settling: it is directed at the place, continually, and the sentence never once mentions what the people think about living there. That emphasis is the Spirit's and not mine.

So you are standing on watched ground tonight. Not ground you have earned by committing to it, and not ground that becomes watched at the moment you finally admit out loud that you live here. Deuteronomy 11:12 puts God's eyes on the place, and the Holy Spirit is the One putting that under a man in a flat he still calls the flat.

And look at the time it covers. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Not from the beginning of your confidence to the end of it. That phrase is deliberately built to leave no gap, and the four years you have spent saying at the moment are inside it, every day of them, with nothing switched off while you were undecided.

Now let me say the thing that I think has been done to you with the best intentions.

You have been told, probably more than once, that the answer is to commit. Decide you are staying. Put down roots. Unpack the boxes and mean it. And every version of that advice hands the whole weight back to you, because it makes your being somewhere the output of a decision you have to make and then keep making. Nothing in this passage works like that. His Spirit has never once made a man's standing depend on his own resolve, and Deuteronomy 11 does not so much as mention the resolve.

Paul said the same thing to a crowd of strangers in a city that was not his. He said God made every nation of men to dwell on the face of the earth and determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings. The boundaries. The bounds of the habitation, set by the One who sets bounds, in the same sentence as the times. You were placed. Not by a preference, not by a plan you executed well, and not by whether you were happy about it at the time, and the Spirit put that in Acts 17 for people standing on ground they had not chosen.

Placed, not committed

There is a line in the Psalms that carries the same picture and it is a surveyor's picture, which is why I have not been able to leave it alone this week.

The measuring lines have fallen for me in pleasant places. Fallen. Not thrown by the man himself and not paced out by him. In the old world a lot was measured with a cord, and where the cord came down was the portion, and the man receiving it did not hold either end of it. David is not saying he chose well. He is saying the line fell, and the ground it fell across is his.

That is what has happened to you at this address. The line fell here. You have four years of standing on a portion while insisting, in the small words, that you are between portions, and Psalm 16:6 is the word the Spirit has been holding over exactly that ground.

So let me be exact about what I am not asking you to do. I am not asking you to decide anything tonight. I am not asking for a plan, a direction, a date, or a promise about next year. You are not required to feel settled, and you are certainly not required to unpack. The boxes can stay against that wall for another four years without moving one inch of what is true, because the brick was a fixed point long before anybody read it, and what is written puts the eyes on the ground rather than on your certainty about it.

And if you are somewhere else next year, this does not fall over. The God who set this boundary sets the next one, and His eyes go on the ground you are standing on then, from the beginning of that year to the end of it. That is written, and the Spirit has never handed anybody a standing that only works at one postcode.

The breakthrough

So stop trying to arrive at a place you have been standing on since the year you got the keys.

That is the whole turn. Not a decision, not a resolution, not a new attitude to the flat. You are placed, and you were placed by Someone who does the placing, and the eyes described in Deuteronomy 11 have been on this ground the entire four years while you called it the flat and meant nothing by it. His Spirit is not waiting for you to feel differently before that becomes true.

You may still speak in the small words tomorrow. That is a habit of nine moving years and habits are slow. It changes nothing about where you are standing, because a fixed point is not a mood, and the mark was cut in the brick by somebody else.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing still. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not produced by conviction: you are in Christ, and this standing has been given to you rather than achieved by four years of deciding well. Deuteronomy 11:12 is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries a spoken word further than your own hearing, and however He answers and in whatever way He does it, the mark was cut into the brick long before you opened your mouth about it.

  1. Four years at this address, you are not a place I am passing through, and I do not call you temporary any more. Scripture says the eyes of the Lord my God are continually on this ground, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. I am somewhere, and it is here.
  2. Belief that I am a lodger in my own life, you are cut off in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to keep choosing my words for me. God determined the times and the boundaries of my dwelling, and He never once asked me to be confident about it first. I am not drifting, I am placed, and the small words do not get the last say on it.
  3. Lord, Your eyes have been on this ground from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, and they were on it before I ever got the keys. You cut the mark into the corner stone Yourself, and Your Holy Spirit has been saying Deuteronomy 11 over this floor for four years while I went on calling it the flat. I am standing still on this floor, and I am home.
