The Scrape on the Passenger Door

This message is for everybody telling you that you are calmer since the nights ended, when from the inside there is nothing there to feel

In July, Marcos's brother-in-law borrowed the car to shift a wardrobe and brought it back with a scrape down the passenger door.

Silver. About the length of a forearm. Gatepost height, with the paint rolled up in a little ridge along the edge of it where the post had bitten.

What happened next is the entire reason I am telling you this.

Marcos came out of the house, looked at the door for about four seconds, said that gatepost on the lane has had half the street, and went back inside and put the kettle on.

That is it. That is the incident.

His brother-in-law stood in the kitchen doorway with the keys still in his hand and did not appear to know what to do with his own face. Marcos's daughter, who is sixteen and misses nothing, looked up from her phone, which she does not do.

Later, when everybody had gone and the mugs were in the sink, his wife said it to him in the hallway. You are different, you know. Two years ago that door would have been a whole evening.

He said he was just tired.

Now here is the part underneath.

For nearly three years Marcos did nights on top of his days. The second one finished at four in the morning and he had a locker there with a spare fleece in it and a bag of teabags, because the machine took a card he never carried. The shift app pinged at five when the next week went up. He learned to open it lying on his side without properly waking, thumb on the glass, one eye.

In January it ended. Not dramatically. What had needed covering stopped needing covering, on an ordinary Tuesday, and he handed the locker key back and cleared the fleece out and drove home in the light for the first time since the year before last.

And since about March, people have been telling him he has changed.

His wife says he is calmer. His daughter said he is less shouty, which she meant kindly. A bloke he has known since school said something at a christening about him seeming more himself, and Marcos said thanks and went and got a chair for somebody.

He has never once agreed with any of them. Not out loud, and not on the inside either.

Because here is what he cannot say to his wife in a hallway at half past ten at night: when he looked at that scrape, he did not feel patient. He did not feel gracious, or forgiving, or full of anything. He felt precisely nothing. There was no warm swell of the better man arriving. There was a mark on a door, and a kettle, and the ordinary noise of his own kitchen.

And a man who has spent his whole life reading his own gauges has quietly concluded that nothing plus nothing is nothing. That he is not calmer. That he is flat, or worn out, or doing a decent impression, and that sooner or later everyone is going to find out which.

This is where I stop talking about Marcos, because you already know whether this is your kitchen.

Maybe nobody mentioned a car door. Maybe it was that you sat through the whole appointment without your leg going, or that somebody said your name in that voice and you did not flinch, or that your sister told you on the phone that you sound like yourself again and you changed the subject.

Something is different and everyone can see it except the one person standing inside it.

The Scrape on the Passenger Door

Rain does not stand about on the surface

I want to take you to a verse that is not about feelings at all, which is exactly why it is the one you need.

For as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes out from My mouth: it shall not return to Me empty, but it shall accomplish what I delight in, and it shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.Isaiah 55:10-11

Isaiah 55:11 says the word does not come back empty. Not most of it. Not the portion you managed to feel at the time. None of it comes back, and the Holy Spirit is holding that sentence over a man who has been quietly grading himself on a scrape down a passenger door. You are not the instrument that measures whether God's word landed in you.

Look at what the picture is actually doing, because Isaiah did not reach for lightning or thunder. He reached for rain going into ground, which is the single most unwatchable event in the natural world. Nobody has ever stood in a field and watched water be absorbed. It goes in, it goes down, it disappears, and the whole thing looks from above like nothing happened, and the Spirit chose that image on purpose for people exactly like you.

Somebody taught you, and probably never said it in words, that if a thing is real you will feel it happening. That is not from Scripture. Isaiah 55 does not mention the sensation of rain even once, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you for a report on your own chest.

I have no standing at all to tell you what has changed in you. I did not see the door, I do not know your kitchen, and my opinion of your progress would be worth nothing to either of us. Isaiah 55:11 has that standing, and His Spirit is the one who makes it land: what God sent into you accomplished what He sent it for.

And notice who the sentence is about. Read the verse again and count how many times it says anything about the field. Not once. Every claim in it is a claim about the word and about the mouth it came out of, and the Spirit is pressing that difference into you as you read this, because it is the entire difference between a change you have to feel and a change you have been given.

Jesus told a story about this too. A man scatters seed on the ground, sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, and He says plainly that the man does not know how. Mark 4:27. The not knowing is in the text. The Holy Spirit did not put it there as a warning about ignorance; He put it there so that a man lying on his side at five in the morning would stop taking the absence of information as evidence against himself.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is smaller and stranger than it sounds.

Nobody is going to hand you the feeling. The evidence is not coming, and I am not going to promise you a moment on a Thursday where it all floods in and you finally know. Isaiah does not offer that and I will not either.

What is being taken off you is the job of proving it.

The Holy Spirit is not standing over your kitchen asking you to produce a receipt. He is standing on Isaiah 55:11, where the promise is that the word does not come back empty, and He is taking a set of scales out of your hands that you were never issued. You have nothing to demonstrate tonight.

And this is not your wife's word for it either, and it is not your daughter's. If it were, then the day nobody comments you would be back to nothing. What God sent went in and did what it was sent to do, and Isaiah says so, and the Spirit says it over you whether the house is full of people or empty.

If the nights are still running for you, if the app still pings at five and the locker still has your fleece in it, then take this on the shift and not afterwards. The rain in Isaiah 55 falls on ground that is in the middle of the season, not on ground that has finished, and the Holy Spirit reads that verse over a man mid season without lowering His voice for it. You are being watered tonight while you are still doing the hard part, and there is no waiting room anywhere in Isaiah 55.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing in your own kitchen if you can, out loud, hand flat on your chest. The right to speak over your own interior is not something you work up to by feeling more: it is yours in Christ, exercised by His authority and not on the strength of your own evidence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the words carry. Isaiah 55 is the ground under all three. Speak them, keep the hand there, and leave the outcome with Him, however He answers.

  1. Scrape on the passenger door, you are a mark on a car and you are not a reading on me. Isaiah says the word God sends does not come back to Him empty, and it did not come back empty out of a man who felt nothing in his own kitchen. I am not taking a measurement off you.
  2. Fear that there is nobody home in here, get out of this house. In the name of Jesus, the God whose word accomplishes the thing He sent it for did not send it into me and leave the place empty, and you have no say in what is going on under the surface.
  3. Father, You have never once asked me to feel the rain go in. Isaiah 55 is Yours and this kitchen is Yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one telling me the work went down where I cannot watch it. My hand is over my heart and I am agreeing with You out loud tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
