Carr Bank is eight acres over the road and up, and Dennis could draw it for you on the back of a feed bag with his eyes shut.
Two sides hedge, one side wall, and the fourth side the old drove lane where the ground falls away and the whole valley opens underneath you. His grandfather took it in on a handshake. His father limed it three times. Dennis cut hay off it for twenty two years, and it was the last field on the place to go under in a wet October and the first to dry.
Four autumns ago it went.
It had to be sold to clear what was owed, and it was the one piece that could go without taking the rest of the place with it. A man came out and walked it with him and was decent about the whole thing. There was a form. There was a solicitor's letter. And then there was a morning in November when Dennis went up to open the gate at Carr Bank out of pure habit and stood with his hand on the latch and worked out, standing there, that he had no business on the other side of it.
The rest of the farm is still his. That is what people say to him, and they mean it kindly, and it is true.
The man who has it now keeps it properly. Fenced it, topped it, put the wall right where it had come down by the drove lane. Dennis passes that hedge four times a week going to the market road and he cannot not look.
And here is what he has been doing for four years, on his own, and he has never once called it what it is.
He has been going back through his own life to find the fault.
Was it the year he did not go to his uncle's funeral. Was it the temper on him when the boy was small. Was it that he stopped going in the winter, or the way he spoke to his wife the February the sheds flooded, or something further back that he cannot even name and only feels the shape of. He works at it the way a man works at a knot in the dark, going over the same three inches of string, over and over, certain that if he keeps his fingers on it long enough he will feel where it starts.
He has never said out loud what he is actually asking, because a man does not say a thing like that.
What did I do, that He took Carr Bank off me.
Here is where Dennis steps out of it, because you have your own eight acres and you know exactly where it is.
It might not be a field. It might be a job, or a house, or a name you had in a place. It might be somebody who stopped answering. It might be a body that used to do a thing it does not do now.
Something went. And you have spent the time since running a quiet investigation into yourself.

What the sale was not
I am going to tell you what this is not, and then I am going to stop, and I would like you to notice that I stop.
I do not know what happened to Carr Bank. Neither does anybody who tells you they do. I am not going to hand you a lesson, or a discipline, or a pruning, because I have no idea whether any of those words belong anywhere near your autumn, and the moment a man is handed one of them he starts trying to live up to it. So there is no reason coming from me. That is not withholding. That is the only honest thing I have.
What I do have is an oath, and it is better than a reason. Isaiah 54:9 has God swearing one, and it repays reading slowly because of what He sets it beside. As I swore that the waters of Noah would never again go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. That oath stands over the man at the gate the whole time he is building his case, and the Spirit speaks it right into the middle of the case. You are not under investigation. It was closed by an oath before you ever opened it.
This is like the days of Noah to Me: as I swore that the waters of Noah would never again go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you, and My covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.Isaiah 54:9 and 10
I have no standing to tell a man what to make of his own ground, and I will not try it. Isaiah 54:10 has that standing. The mountains may depart and the hills be removed, and His steadfast love does not depart and His covenant of peace is not removed. You have a covenant of peace that outlasts the hills, and His Spirit is the one pressing that into a man who slows down at the same hedge four times a week without meaning to.
Look at what Isaiah picks to measure it against. Not the weather, not a season, not anything that turns over. He goes for the two most permanent things a countryman ever raises his eyes to, the mountains and the hills, the things that were here before the parish and will outlast the road. And He says those go first. Whatever else is loose in your life, that is not.
Somebody will have said to you, over a gate, kindly, that God does not waste anything. You took it home and worked it up into an explanation, because a man will take any explanation at all over none. But watch what Scripture refuses to do here. It never once tells you what the eight acres were for. Psalm 103:10 says He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our crookedness, and the Spirit will not let that lie on the page as poetry. You were not repaid that autumn. Whatever else it was, it was not a bill coming in.
The investigation has a design fault in it, and it is worth naming out loud, because you have been inside it too long to see the edges.
It cannot finish. There is no verdict waiting at the end of it. A man can go over the same three inches of string for the rest of his life and never find where the knot starts, because there is no knot. And the longer he works at it, the more certain he becomes that the fault must be something enormous, since it is taking this much finding.
That is not my reading of your four years. That is what the Spirit has been saying through Romans 8:1 every time you come up over the top and your hands tighten on the wheel: there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Now. Not when the inquiry reports. You are in Christ, and there is nothing left standing against a man in Christ for an inquiry to turn up.
The word Isaiah reaches for is covenant, and a covenant is not a mood God happens to be in on a given morning. It is lodged. It sits the way a boundary sits, whoever is farming the ground this year and whoever farms it next. Romans 8:38 puts death and life, things present and things to come, height and depth on the list of what cannot separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Carr Bank is not on that list, and it could not be, because nothing of that kind is. You are not loved by eight acres less than you were four autumns ago, and the written word and the Spirit say it together.
Here is the turn, and it is not a feeling. Feelings about a lost field come and go with the weather and the time of year.
Hand the investigation back. That is the whole move, and it is a handing back rather than a giving up, because it was never a job you were assigned. You have an oath over you, sworn in Isaiah 54 and carried by the Spirit into a kitchen four autumns later, that He is not angry with you and does not rebuke you. A man cannot both hold that and keep a file open on himself. One of the two has to be set down, and it is not the oath.
And if it is not over, if there is another piece of your place with a question hanging over it this month, none of this needs the hard part to be finished first. The oath was sworn over people standing in the middle of it. It does not wait for a good year to become true.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the Carr Bank gate if you can stop the vehicle, and in your own kitchen if you cannot. The authority to speak over your own ground is not confidence you have to work up. It is yours in Christ, exercised in His name, standing on what is written and made to live by His Spirit. Speak with your hands open, and however He answers and in whatever season, the outcome is His and not one ounce of it is yours to carry.
- Eight acres at Carr Bank, you are not a sentence passed on my life. Scripture says the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, and the covenant of peace is not removed with them. I drive past you now with my hands open.
- Suspicion that God took Carr Bank off me because of what I am like, you have had four years and you get no more. He does not deal with me according to my sins, and He swore an oath that He is not angry and does not rebuke me. I am loved exactly here, in the place I have left.
- Father, You put that oath over me before I ever started looking for the fault, and You have never once been angry with me about that autumn. In the name of Jesus I close the investigation I have been running on my own life, and I open my hands at the gate. The Spirit and the written word say the same thing over me: the love does not depart, and the covenant of peace is not removed.
Isaiah 54:9-10
