My Own Face in the Black Screen

This message is for my sister says on the phone that I am not the same man, and I stand in the hallway afterwards and cannot find one single piece of evidence for it

He takes the Sunday call standing up in the hallway, by the radiator, because that is where the signal was best in the last place and the habit came with him and has never been examined since.

His sister calls at nine. Her kitchen is behind her the whole time, a kettle going on and off, a tap, a child asking a question three times in a row and being answered on the third, somebody in another room shouting about shoes. She talks the way she has always talked, in the middle of doing four things, and it is the most restful twenty minutes of his week.

Near the end, not making a speech of it, in exactly the voice she uses for the shopping, she says: you are not the same man. You know that.

And then she is gone, because somebody needs her.

The screen goes black and his own face comes back in it, held out at arm's length, lit from above by the landing light, which is a bad light on any face.

He stands there and runs the search.

Not the same how? He goes looking, properly, the way a careful man does. He tries to picture what he was like two years ago and he cannot get a clean image of that man either, so there is no before to compare with, and no after, only a flat gray feeling that has been running so long he has stopped noticing it is there.

Then he audits what he can actually find, which is all the same as it ever was. He checks the locks twice, both locks, every night. He wakes at ten to four and lies there. He cannot have the news on with the sound up. He counts the exits in any room he walks into, which he has done since he was nineteen and assumed everybody did, until a woman at work watched him do it and looked at him strangely.

Nothing. Not one item of evidence. The search comes back empty every time and he has run it most Sundays for about a year.

So he puts the phone in his pocket and goes and washes the two things in the sink, and he does not say the conclusion out loud because you cannot say a thing like that to a sister.

The conclusion is that she is being kind. That she needs him to be better and so she sees it, the way people see what they need to see in the ones they got out.

And under that one, quieter and worse, is the other. That whatever it is people mean when they say a person has changed, it did not happen in him, and possibly does not happen in men like him.

Now let me stop calling him he.

Because somebody said it to you too. A friend, a brother, a nurse, somebody at work who does not know the half of it. They said it in an ordinary voice and meant it, and you went and looked, and there was nothing there.

Stand where you are. Nothing is being inspected here.

My Own Face in the Black Screen

The evidence was never the ground

Let me tell you what I am not going to do, because half the weight of a message like this is the reader waiting for the trick.

I am not going to prove it to you. I am not going to list the things you do now that you did not do two years ago and hand them back as an exhibit, and I am not going to tell you to believe your sister because she can see you better than you can see yourself. She probably can. It still would not be the ground, and if I built this on her eyesight then the next time she is tired or distracted the whole thing goes down.

Philippians 1:6 puts the confidence somewhere else entirely, and it is worth noticing where.

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.Philippians 1, verse 6

Read who the sentence is about. It is not about the man and it is not about the people watching him. The confidence is in the Worker. You are the site of a good work, not the inspector of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who began it on a day you almost certainly cannot date, in a room you may not remember being in.

I have no authority to tell you that you have changed. I did not know you before and I cannot see inside you now.

Psalm 138:8 has that authority: the Lord will perfect what concerns me, and the psalm hands the perfecting to Him in the same breath as it asks Him not to forsake the works of His own hands. You are a work of His hands, and the Spirit is the one who has kept that sentence alive for three thousand years so that it could arrive in a hallway by a radiator on a Sunday at nine.

Now here is the thing that has been quietly wrong with the search itself.

You were taught, somewhere, probably without anybody meaning to teach it, that real change announces itself. That it arrives with a feeling, or a date, or a moment you could point at. So the absence of the announcement became the absence of the thing.

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the splendour of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from splendour to splendour, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.2 Corinthians 3, verse 18

Look at where the face in that verse is pointed. Not at itself. The one being transformed is looking at the Lord, and the transforming is happening on the side of him he cannot see, by the Spirit, while his attention is entirely elsewhere. The one thing that sentence will not let a man do is turn the mirror around, and turning the mirror around is precisely what you did at nine o'clock with the landing light on your face.

You are being transformed while looking the other way. That is not a consolation prize. That is the mechanism, written down, and the Spirit named in the verse is the one running it.

And that is not my read of your Sunday.

Ephesians 2:10 is: we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand. Workmanship is a made thing, and no made thing has ever assessed its own making from the outside. The Spirit put that word there on purpose. You are His work, and the work does not become real at the moment the material notices.

The breakthrough

So here it is, in the hallway, with the screen going dark in your hand.

The work in you is real and it is not yours to verify. Philippians 1:6 says He who began it is the one carrying it through to the end, and the Holy Spirit is at work in a man on the exact days that man can find nothing at all.

You have no case to build tonight. Not for your sister, not against her, not for yourself. The verdict was entered by Somebody who was present for every part of it, and Scripture says the Lord perfects what concerns you while the Spirit does the work you keep trying to audit.

And I will not tell you when you will feel it, or whether. I do not know, nobody does, and a message that promises you a feeling has just moved the whole thing back onto the ground we spent this hour taking it off.

The locks can still get checked twice tonight. Ten to four can still happen. None of that is a report on what God is doing in you, and none of it has ever been read as one by Him.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, with your hand on your chest, in whatever voice you have on a Sunday night. The standing to speak them is not something your sister granted you and not something an empty search can take away: you are in Christ, and this authority is yours because He gave it to you, written down long before anybody phoned. However He answers, and whatever these next years hold, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes these words land, and the outcome is His.

  1. Black screen in my hand, you are a mirror and a mirror has never once been the record of me. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in me is the One carrying it through, and He did not ask my own face for a second opinion. In the name of Jesus I stop searching my reflection for evidence.
  2. Suspicion that my sister is only being kind, you have examined nothing and you are put out of this hallway. Scripture says that if anyone is in Christ there is a new creation, and a new creation has never waited for me to notice it before it was true. I am not the same man, and that holds tonight whether or not I can find one gram of it.
  3. Lord, You began this in me on a day I could not name and You have never once needed my agreement to carry on. Your word says I am Your workmanship, and Your Holy Spirit is the One doing the work on the side of me I cannot see. My hand is on my chest and I am trusting the Worker instead of the evidence.
