She gets to the cafe twenty minutes early, and the twenty minutes are not about the coffee.
There is one table she wants. Back corner, wall behind it, and the chair on the far side of it looks straight down the room at the door. If somebody else has it she will take the other one and she will be fine, and she will also spend the hour turning her head slightly more often than a person needs to.
So she comes early. She has never told anybody that she comes early.
On the Thursday I want to tell you about, Priya from the second floor sat down opposite her with two flat whites and got about four sentences in before she said it. You are so much calmer than you were when you started. I mean it. You are a different person to the woman who came in that first week.
And here is what was actually happening in that chair while the sentence was being said.
The door had gone twice. Once for a man with a rucksack who put it down heavily by the counter, and once for a delivery, and the second time the door had swung wide and hit the stop with a crack. She had logged the rucksack, the crack, the man's voice when he ordered, whether it went up at the end, and the two ways out of the room, and she had done all of it in the time it took Priya to say the word calmer.
She said thank you. She meant it. She also went home and thought about it for the rest of the evening, which is the part that has brought me here.
Because there are two reports on this woman and they do not agree. The one from outside says calmer. The one from inside says watchful, and watchful is not calm, and she knows the difference the way you know your own handwriting. Calm is when the door goes and nothing in you moves. Watchful is when the door goes and everything in you moves and none of it reaches your face.
Her father was a shouter. Her mother learned the timings of him and organized a whole household around them, and neither of them is a monster and neither of them is a lesson, and I am not going to hand you a sentence tonight that says those years were teaching you to read a room. They were not teaching you anything. They were years, and they took what they took, and nothing came out of them that had to come that way.
You are safe here. If people keep telling you how far you have come and the inside of you cannot find one gram of it, stay with me, because I am not here to talk you into agreeing with them.

Two readings and neither one is the record
Look at the verb at the front of Psalm 138:8 and notice whose it is. The Lord will perfect what concerns me. Not I will get there, not it should be along shortly, not it counts once I can feel it. You are the thing being perfected and you have never once been the one perfecting it, and the Holy Spirit has been holding that word steady over a woman who grades herself on the way home from every coffee.
The Lord will perfect what concerns me; Your loving kindness, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the works of Your hands.Psalm 138:8
That is not my kind opinion of your Thursday. It is the end of David's own psalm, where he stops describing himself entirely and asks God not to forsake the works of His own hands, meaning himself, meaning the man praying. You have been the work of those hands the whole time you were sitting there assembling a case against yourself, and His Spirit does not need your agreement to keep working.
Now take the other report, the outside one, because that one is not the record either. The word Samuel got at Bethlehem was that a man looks at the eyes and the Lord looks at the heart, and we usually aim that line at people who judge by appearances. It cuts the other way too. Priya is looking at the outside of you. You are looking at the inside of you, which is still a look, still a person squinting at a surface she happens to be standing on. Neither of you is holding the file, and the Spirit is not worried by that for a second.
Here is what I want to take off you, if I can. The idea that you owe somebody a feeling. Nowhere in that psalm is a person asked to corroborate what God is doing in them, and nowhere in the whole of Scripture is a report from a person's own chest treated as the master copy. You were never appointed the inspector of yourself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that appointment vacant, which is mercy and not a demotion.
I have no standing to tell you that something has shifted in you. I was not there when you were fourteen and I cannot see the inside of you now, and anybody who claims a view like that is guessing at your expense. Paul had standing, and he gave it to God rather than to himself: He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion. You are a work God started, and a work God is the one to finish, and the Spirit presses that into a woman who has no receipt to show for it.
And now the watching itself, because I said I would not talk you out of it. A body that maps the exits is a body doing a job it was given a long time ago and never formally released from. It is not a verdict. It is not a character. It is certainly not the true you with the calm painted over the top. You are not a performance with a frightened woman underneath it. Scripture names people by what God has put in them rather than by the habits a house left on them, and His Spirit says that name over the corner table whether or not one thing in your chest agrees.
I am not going to tell you the twenty minutes early stops, or that the door will one day go and you will not notice. I have no idea, and I will not spend your hope on a guess. What I will tell you is where the record is kept, and it is not in the room.
Here is the turn, and it does not ask you to feel anything.
Next Thursday, get there twenty minutes early. Take the chair. Take the wall behind you and the door in front of you and the whole arrangement, and take it without the running commentary, because a woman can sit in that chair as a case she is building or as a work God is finishing, and those are two different women in the same seat.
You have a change on record in a place your own chest cannot read, and the written word gives the perfecting to God and hands you nothing to prove, and the Spirit is the one making that land today rather than on some Thursday when you finally feel calm.
When the door goes and everything in you moves, let it move. Then put the true thing beside it and drink your coffee.
Declare this over yourself
None of this has to be felt in order to be true when you say it. This standing is yours because you are in Christ, given to you rather than earned by you, and the authority under these words is His, laid down in Scripture and carried by His Spirit rather than produced by how convincingly you speak them. Whether the inside of you ever catches up and reports back is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and on His own timing. What is settled with your hand on your chest is who is keeping the record.
- Chair in the corner, you are a seat in a cafe and you have never once been the report on me. Psalm 138 gives the perfecting to God and gives me nothing to prove, so I sit in you as a work of His hands and not as a case I am building, and His Spirit says so over this table.
- Suspicion that they are all being fooled and the watching is the real me, you are overruled in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to write my name. It is written that the Lord perfects what concerns me, and the Spirit has been at that work on every Thursday I sat down and felt absolutely nothing.
- Father, You do not forsake the works of Your own hands, and I am one of them. You began this and You are the one who finishes it, and I am putting my hand flat over my heart and leaving the verdict with You.
