The boiler went at the end of October, and by the middle of November Marku had stopped mentioning it.
He had one room over a shop: a sink, a two ring hob, a bed against the long wall, and a radiator that stayed cold whichever way he turned the little brass valve. So he wore his coat indoors. A heavy navy thing with a torn lining, and he wore it to eat, wore it to read, wore it over the blankets on the two nights in January when the inside of the window grew a rind of ice.
He got good at the cold. That is the part people miss. He learned which chair caught the last of the afternoon light and he moved it twice a day to keep it there. He learned to run the hob for a minute before he took his gloves off so his fingers would work the tin opener. He learned to sleep in a way that kept the draught off the back of his neck. By February he had a system, and the system was excellent, and it was the only thing in his life he was genuinely good at.
In March a man came with a bag of tools and was gone inside forty minutes, and by teatime the radiator was ticking and knocking and hot right along the top. Marku put his hand flat on it that evening to check. Then he put his hand on it again an hour later, to check again.
He kept the coat on until June.
Not on purpose. He did not decide anything, because there was nothing to decide. He came in from work, hung nothing up, sat down, and ate his dinner in a coat in a warm room, and it did not once cross his mind that anything had changed. A friend came round in May and asked him, kindly, whether he was on his way out. He said no. He looked down at himself, at the torn lining and the buttons, and he still did not take it off, because taking a coat off is a thing a person has to actually do, and nobody had ever taught him to do it. He had only ever been taught how to survive a cold room.
The heat had been on for three months. He had not once been warm.
There are four boxes against the wall of your back room.
They have been there four years. The tape across the tops has gone the color of weak tea and it lifts at the corners if you touch it. You know roughly what is in them: books, a cable box, the mugs from the flat before the flat before this one, a folder of paperwork you would have to open properly. And there is a lease in a drawer in this place with your own name printed on it, not somebody's mother's name, not a friend of a friend's name, yours, and it has been renewed four times.
You could not tell anyone why the boxes are still shut. That is the thing you would find hardest to explain, if anyone ever asked you, which nobody does.

Nobody ever taught you how to take it off
Let me start where I think the shame sits, because I suspect this has been filed under laziness.
It is not laziness. A man who moved fourteen times in nine years is not lazy. He is skilled. Packing is a skill, and reading a room for its exits is a skill, and knowing which of your possessions can be carried down a stairwell in one trip is a real and hard won competence that nobody on earth hands out a certificate for. What has happened to you is not a failure of effort. It is that the whole of your training was in one direction, and no part of it was in the other.
Hebrews 4:10 says that whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his own works. Entered. That is a past tense with a door behind it, not a target ahead of it. You are inside that rest tonight, in a flat with four taped boxes in it and a coat you have not taken off, and it is the Holy Spirit saying that over you and not me.
Now look at the word the writer of Hebrews reaches for in verse nine, because he does something unusual. He does not use the ordinary Greek word for rest that he has been using all chapter. He coins one: sabbatismos, a Sabbath keeping, a rest with a particular shape to it. And the shape of a Sabbath is that it is not earned by the week that came before it. It arrives on the seventh day for the man who worked hard and for the man who got nothing done, in the same evening, at the same hour, and the sun does not consult either of them.
I have no standing at all to tell you the emergency is over. Hebrews 4:9 has that standing, and the Spirit is the one pressing it into a man who still keeps his boots by the door: a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God, and you have it. Not as a payment for having got through the hard years. It remains, which means it was already there when you were sleeping on other people's floors, and it is there tonight.
So the unpacking is not the test. Please hear that. If you never open those boxes, nothing in your standing before God moves by a millimetre, because none of this rests on cardboard.
What I am after is smaller and further in. It is the moment in Marku's room in March when the radiator went hot and his body did not believe it. That is where you live. The lease is real, the door locks, the heating works, the emergency ended four years ago, and something in you is still running the system it built for a cold room, faithfully, every day, at some cost.
So then, a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God. For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his own works, just as God did from his.Hebrews 4:9-10
There is a sentence God gave to a worn out man in the desert that I want you to have as well. Moses asked to be shown the way, and the answer he got was not a map. It was: My presence shall go, and I will give you rest. Give. You were given it, as a gift is given, and Exodus 33:14 is where it is written down, and His Spirit has been putting that sentence in front of you for four years in a hundred quiet ways you filed as coincidence.
Here is the turn, and it is quieter than you might be expecting.
You are not being asked to unpack anything tonight. The whole weight in Hebrews 4 falls on entering and none of it falls on tidying, and the Spirit is not standing in your hallway with a list. You are being asked to notice that the room is warm.
That is all. Stand in your own back room, with the boxes exactly where they are, and let it be true for the length of one breath that the danger has passed. Not that it will pass. That it did. Four years ago. And that every hour you have spent braced since then was not wasted, and was not stupid, and was not a sin, and does not need to be accounted for to anybody.
You have a Sabbath in you that predates your lease, and Hebrews 4:9 is where it stands written, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes it more than a fact on a page. That is what makes this different from a person talking themselves into calm. You are not manufacturing warmth. You are standing in a room that somebody else heated.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where the boxes can see you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority in these lines is His, given to you, not worked up out of your own effort. Hebrews 4:9 is the ground you are standing on and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it land, and however He answers everything else in your life, and in whatever timing is His, the rest you are speaking about was settled before you signed anything.
- Boxes against the wall, you are not my emergency any more, and the tape on you is four years out of date. Hebrews 4:9 says a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God, and this flat is standing inside it. I am home, and you are cardboard.
- Verdict that the staying was left out of me, you are evicted from this address in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to keep reading my back room as evidence. The Holy Spirit did not bring me four years into one lease to leave me half arrived. I live here, and my hands are open while I say it.
- Lord, You gave the rest and I am putting my shoulders down inside it. It is written that whoever has entered Your rest has rested from his own works, and I entered, so the bracing is over in this house tonight. The coat is off, and I am sitting down in a warm room You heated.
