The Thermometer on the Porch Post

This message is for everyone tells you that you are doing well, you cannot feel one thing when they say it, and you have begun to think the nothing is the truth about you

The thermometer has been nailed to the porch post at eye height since before anybody in that house can remember, and for two years now it has read forty eight.

Not about forty eight. Forty eight. The red thread sits on the same short mark in a hard frost and in the middle of August, and it has sat there so long that the paint has bleached in a pale ring around it where the sun comes over the ridge in the afternoon.

She still reads it. That is the part worth noticing. She comes out with the washing and her eyes go to the glass the way they have gone to it for thirty years, and she takes the number in, and she carries it back inside knowing what kind of day it is out there.

The rest of the family gave up on it long ago. Her son taps it with a knuckle when he visits and says it is shot. One of the grandchildren asked once why they kept it and nobody had an answer except that it had always been there.

Now think about what that porch has actually seen in two years. Ice standing on the rail. Beans up the trellis and then cut down. The sun coming round far enough in June to warm the boards through the soles of her shoes. Four turns of the season across those steps, and the world did not consult the glass once, and the glass reported none of it.

And there is a woman in that house who has been reading herself exactly the same way.

They tell her she is doing well. Her sister said it on the phone in the spring, kindly, and meant every word. The woman at church said she seemed like herself again. Her son says she has turned a corner, and he says it with such relief in his voice that she can hear how badly he needs it to be true.

Then she stands in her kitchen afterwards and checks the glass, and the glass says forty eight.

Nothing. No lift, no warmth, not a flicker of the person they have just described. And two years of that has taught her something she has never once said out loud to anybody: that the nothing is the honest reading, that everyone else is being kind, and that the truth about her is the number on the post.

That is the sentence I have come for.

The Thermometer on the Porch Post

What the glass was never able to see

Plainly, before anything else: nothing here is going to measure you. Nobody is about to say that two years is long enough, or that a woman in your position ought to be feeling something by now. That accounting has been running in your own head without any help from me, and I would not hand you a schedule if I had one, because there is not one and anybody offering you one is guessing out loud.

I have no standing to tell you that something in you has changed. I have not stood in your kitchen and I will not insult you with a guess. 1 Samuel 16:7 has that standing, and His Spirit is the one who takes a line off a page and puts it inside a body that has stopped reporting: you are looked at this afternoon by somebody who has never once used the glass.

Here is the verse. It is worth knowing what is going on in the room when it gets said.

Do not look upon his face or upon the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For it is not as a man sees, for a man looks upon the eyes, but the Lord looks upon the heart.1 Samuel 16:7

An old prophet is standing in a farmyard with a horn of oil in his hand, working along a line of brothers, and he has just picked the wrong one. Not carelessly. He picked the tall one, the one who looked the part, the one anybody in that yard would have picked. And God stopped him in front of everybody and told him the reading he was taking was the wrong reading altogether.

1 Samuel 16:7 sets two ways of reading a person side by side and throws one of them straight out. A man looks at the eyes. God looks at the heart. And the Spirit is pressing the thrown-out half of that verse over a woman at her own sink with the phone still warm in her hand: you have been reading yourself off the eyes for two years, and the eyes were never the instrument.

Because looking at the eyes is what your sister was doing on the phone, and it is what the woman at church was doing, and neither of them was lying to you. They were reading the outside, which is the only thing anybody else has got, and they read it generously because they love you. That reading was never proof of anything, and it was never meant to be.

Here is the harder half, and it is the half nobody says. When a person checks inside for a flicker and finds none, the thing being checked is not the heart. It is the feelings, and feelings sit on the outside of a person the way a thermometer sits on the outside of a house. A feeling can be nailed up, faded, stuck on one number, while the whole season turns behind it.

Notice what 1 Samuel 16:7 does not say. It does not say the Lord will look at the heart once there is something in there worth looking at. It says the Lord looks, plain present tense, ongoing, needing nothing from the heart in order to be able to see it. His Spirit is not standing outside waiting for the red thread to move before He speaks: you are read all the way through, today, by the only reader whose figures are accurate.

The reading taken from the inside

The boy God had already chosen was out in a field with the sheep and nobody had thought him worth calling in. Nothing about him changed between being left out of that line and the oil going over his head. What changed was that a true reading finally got said out loud.

The Holy Spirit is doing one small thing on that porch this afternoon, and it is not a large or dramatic thing. He is standing on 1 Samuel 16:7 and taking the instrument out of your hand. You were never appointed to grade yourself, not once, not in any season of your life, and the appointment you handed yourself two years ago is being quietly withdrawn.

And if the emergency in your own house has not ended, if this is week three and not year two, nothing here asks you to have arrived anywhere. Samuel was sent into that farmyard in the middle of a national mess with the wrong king still on the throne, and the verse held there. It holds in a room where nothing is over.

Somebody told you the feeling comes back in stages, and that by two years you would be into the one where it starts to lift. No such chart is written anywhere in Scripture, and the Holy Spirit has never once handed a grieving woman a scale to score herself against. What is written is that the Lord looks on the heart, full stop, with no timetable hung off the end of it: you have a God who reads you from the inside on a day when the outside has nothing at all to report.

That is not my opinion about your numbness. That is what the Spirit has been saying through 1 Samuel 16:7 in a house where nobody has felt a thing since the spring, and you have been filing it away as a nice story about a shepherd boy. You are not the number on the post, and the God who reads hearts has never taken a single reading off it.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is a small one, which is right, because a large one would only be another demand on a woman who has nothing left to spend.

Stop taking your own temperature.

Not forever, and not as a technique. Just now, for the length of this. Put down the instrument you have been holding up to yourself every morning since the spring, because you have been getting the same number back in every weather and building a whole portrait of yourself out of it.

You have not gone hollow. Hollow is a word for a thing with nothing in it, and 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looks at what is inside, and He has never once come back from looking and reported an empty house. The Holy Spirit is the one saying that into a kitchen where the woman standing in it cannot feel a word of it as it lands.

Feeling is weather. What He sees is not weather, and it does not turn with the season.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is you working up a feeling you do not have. The authority in these lines belongs to Christ and it is yours, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, given to you rather than built up at a kitchen sink. Speak them under His will and not your own, and however He answers, leave the outcome with Him. 1 Samuel 16:7 is the ground the words stand on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence like that past a set of feelings that have stopped reporting.

  1. Thermometer on the porch post, you have read the same number through four turns of the season and you were never once reading me. The Lord looks on the heart, and He has never taken His account of me off a piece of glass. I take you off the nail today, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Nothing where the feeling used to be, you are not the truth about me and you are no verdict on what is left in here. God reads from the inside, and He has never come back from looking and reported an empty house. I stop taking my own temperature.
  3. Lord, You passed over the tall one in that farmyard and sent for a boy nobody had bothered to call in from the field. You read me the same way, from the inside, on a day when I cannot feel one thing. My hand is over my heart, and the reading stays Yours.
