There is a corner about four hundred yards from her front door, and she has not turned right at it since the week she moved in.
The bus drops her at the parade. Right takes her down past the pub, then the chip shop, then home in six minutes. Left takes her the other way, up along the railings by the allotments, round the back of the school and in from the far end, and it adds eleven minutes.
She has walked the eleven minutes roughly a thousand times.
It is not the pub. She has nothing against the pub, and in the daytime she has walked straight past it without a thought. It is the pub at ten past ten on a Friday, and the particular sound that comes out of a door when it opens, which is a man's voice going up and then going up again over the top of itself. She heard that sound at fourteen through a wall and she can pick it out of a street from a hundred yards.
In the first month she told herself the long way was temporary. A sensible arrangement while she got settled.
She has been counting since then, in the way a person does without admitting it. There is a woman at work who left a bad flat and was, by her own account, absolutely fine within about six months. She keeps that six months in her pocket like a coin she takes out and looks at.
And somewhere in the third year a sentence arrived and moved in. She has never said it out loud to anybody. It goes: this is just what I am like now.
That is the sentence I have come for. Not the corner.
Her father, for what it is worth, was frightened of something he never once named, and it came out of him sideways as noise, and he is a real man and not a monster and I am not going to draw him as one. Her mother stood in the middle of it for twenty six years and kept a house going. None of that explains anything and none of it was for anything. I want to be very plain about that before we go on, because the kindest sounding lie in the world is the one that tells a person their worst years were an education. They were not. They were years.
You are safe here. If nothing about you has visibly shifted in a long time and you have started to suspect that the jump, the flinch, the long way round, is simply your character now, then stay with me. That suspicion is the thing we are dealing with, and it is not true, and I am not going to prove it to you by pointing at improvements.

The garden is the one doing it
Read Isaiah 61:11 for its grammar and the whole thing changes shape in your hands. The sprout is not the subject of a single verb in that sentence. The soil brings forth. The garden causes. The Lord causes. The green thing that eventually shows is the object all the way through, the thing being done to, never once the thing doing. You are not the department responsible for producing the evidence, and the Spirit has been holding that line steady over three years of pavement where nothing at all has come up.
For as the soil brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.Isaiah 61:11
Ask that verse what a root is for and it will not answer you, because it never mentions a root. It talks about soil, and a garden, and a causing, and everything it is actually interested in is happening in the dark under somebody's feet. You have been standing over the wrong end of the plant with a torch. Scripture puts the working end underground where nobody is admiring it, and His Spirit has not been idle down there for one of those thousand walks.
Paul ran into the same knot in Corinth with a church that was busy scoring itself, and he cut it in one line. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth, he wrote, and then he went further and said neither the planter nor the waterer is anything at all, only God who gives the growth. You have never once been the growth department. The Holy Spirit made certain that sentence stayed in the letter, because it is the sentence that takes the whole weight off a woman who checks herself nightly for signs.
Now hold that against the coin in your pocket. Nothing in the written word measures you against a colleague who was fine in six months, and the Spirit does not keep that kind of book on anybody. There is no chart on a wall in heaven with names down one side. You are not behind, and you cannot be behind, because there is no schedule anybody entered you into.
The Holy Spirit has been at work under a pavement for three years, and the ground He is standing on is one line of Isaiah 61: the causing belongs to God, not to the thing being grown. That means the quiet is not evidence of nothing. It is what the underneath of a growing thing looks like from up here, which is exactly like a street. You are being rooted, and you are not stalled.
And now the flinch itself, because I said I would come for the sentence and not the corner. A body that comes up off a chair when a door goes hard is a reflex. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a character, and it is certainly not a name. You are not a flinch with a woman attached to it. Scripture names people by what God has put into them rather than by what a house left on them, and His Spirit says that name over you at the corner whether or not you can hear it yet.
I am not going to tell you the long way stops. I have no idea, and anybody who does tell you that is guessing with your hope. What I will tell you is what is going on underneath the eleven minutes, and it is not nothing, and it is not you failing to grow.
Here is the turn, and it does not involve the corner at all.
Tonight, take the long way if that is what tonight has in it. Take it without the running commentary. Walk it as a woman with a root and not as a woman with a fault, because those are two different women walking the same eleven minutes, and only one of them arrives home carrying a verdict.
You have a life that is being held from underneath, and the written word gives the causing to God and hands you nothing to prove, and the Spirit is the one making that land tonight instead of next year.
If the sentence comes back, and it will, let it come and do not argue with it. Just put the true one next to it and keep walking.
Declare this over yourself
Nothing here has to be felt in order to be said. This standing is yours because you are in Christ, given to you rather than shown by you, and the authority under these words is His, laid down in Scripture and carried by His Spirit rather than generated by how firmly you say them. Whether anything ever comes up where you or anybody else can see it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and on His timing. What is settled on this floor is who is doing the growing.
- Corner by the pub, you are one turn of a pavement and you have no authority to tell me what I am. Isaiah says the garden is the one that causes the growing, so I walk you tonight as a woman with a root and not a woman with a fault.
- Conclusion that this is simply who I am now, you are overruled in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to put your name on me. It is written that God gives the growth, and the Spirit has been working under this pavement on every one of the nights I looked and saw nothing.
- Lord, You are the one who causes it, and I am not the one who has to show it. You have been growing something for three years under a street that never once changed, and I am pressing both feet into this floor and calling it ground.
