The Mug That Does Not Match

This message is for you are not in trouble and nobody is unkind to you, you are just not anywhere, and there is not one room in that house that is yours rather than theirs

There is one mug in that cupboard that does not match the others, and it is hers.

The rest are a set. Six of them, cream with a green band, bought together and washed together and lined up on the second shelf with all the handles turned the same way, because that is how her daughter in law keeps a cupboard and it is her cupboard.

Hers is a blue one they bought for her the week she moved in. It stands slightly apart at the end of the shelf, and every person in that house knows it is Grandma's.

She washes it herself the moment she has finished with it. Every time. Nobody has ever asked her to. She rinses it, dries it on the tea towel over the rail, and puts it back at the end of the shelf with the handle turned the same way as the others.

She has never once left it out on the side.

That is the whole of it, and if you have not lived in somebody else's house you might need a moment with that. Leaving a mug on the side is what a person does in their own kitchen. It says, I will be back through here in a bit. It says, this counter and I have an arrangement. Somebody who washes and dries and puts away everything they touch, immediately, every single time, for two years, is not being tidy. They are removing the evidence that they were in the room.

Two years since the funeral. The back bedroom had been the box room and they cleared it out for her properly, painted it, carried her chair up and put it by the window, and they meant every bit of it. Her son still calls it your room. She still calls it the back room.

Nothing is wrong. That is the difficulty. Nobody is unkind, nobody is counting the weeks, she is fed and warm and included in everything, and if you asked her she would tell you she is very lucky and she would mean it.

She is just not anywhere.

The house she and her husband had is sold and the furniture went in a weekend. And in this house, which is a good house full of people who love her, there is not one room, not one shelf, not one square foot of counter that is hers rather than theirs. She sleeps in a room they gave her. She sits in a chair somebody else carried up the stairs for her.

And when she wakes at half past five, which she does, she lies still and waits until she hears somebody else moving about, because the house is not hers to be awake in first.

The Mug That Does Not Match

The field she did not choose

Nothing here is going to measure you, and nothing here is going to arrive with a plan for your life. You have had enough people turn up with a plan. I am not adding to the pile, and I am not going to suggest that a woman in your position ought to be more settled by now, because there is no rate for this and anybody who names one is guessing out loud.

There is a sentence in the book of Ruth that translators have been faintly embarrassed by for centuries. Ruth 2:3 says her chance happened upon the portion of the field belonging to Boaz. Chance. Her chance. The narrator sets it down as flatly as a man writing the weather in a diary, and the Spirit holds that flatness in front of a woman lying still at half past five: you are not reading your own life wrong, you are reading it from the inside, and from the inside a placement and a drift are the same sentence.

Here is the verse.

And she went and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers. And her chance happened upon the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.Ruth 2:3

Now watch what the text does not do next. It does not stop and explain itself. Nobody in that chapter says the Lord guided her steps to the right gate, and no voice comes out of the sky over the barley. Scripture leaves the accident standing exactly where it fell, and then the very next verse has Boaz walking in from Bethlehem, and by the end of the chapter she is being fed at his table and told to stay. His Spirit does the same over a back bedroom: you were put here, and being put somewhere almost never feels like anything at all from the inside of the week it happens in.

That is worth sitting with, because it is the exact thing you have been holding against yourself. You cannot feel placed. You feel like a bag that got set down in a hallway two years ago and nobody has moved it since.

Ruth could not feel it either. She was a widow in a country that was not hers, going out to work behind other people's reapers with no arrangement, no invitation and no idea whose ground she was standing on. The whole book is built on that field being the right one, and she is the last person in the story to find out.

I have no standing to tell you that a back bedroom is your home. I have not slept in it and it is not my house either. Ruth 2:3 has that standing, and His Spirit is the one who takes an old line about a barley field and lands it in a box room with somebody else's paint on the walls: you are placed, and placed is a different word from settled in.

Nothing here requires you to decide anything

Notice what Ruth never did. She made no decision about which field. She had no direction, no preference and no strategy, and she did not stand at the edge of the barley weighing up her options. Look at the verbs Ruth 2:3 hands her: she went, and came, and gleaned. Three plain workaday words, and not one of them is chose. His Spirit is not standing over you waiting for you to pick a direction: you have been placed without choosing, exactly the way she was, and that is not a lesser kind of placing.

And if you are reading this from inside a house where the emergency is still going on, where nothing is sold and nothing is settled and you have no idea where you will be living, nothing here asks you to have arrived. Ruth was three weeks off a road out of Moab with everything still unresolved when that verse was true of her.

That is not my read of your back bedroom. That is what the Spirit has been saying through Ruth 2:3 in a house where a woman washes her own mug the second she has finished with it, and you have been filing it away as a nice story about a foreign girl and a kind farmer. You are not adrift in there.

Ruth 2:8 is the first thing Boaz ever says to her, and it is worth hearing as the instruction it is. Do not go and glean in another field. Do not pass on from here. Stay close, keep your eyes on the field they are reaping. That is the whole of it, and the Spirit lays it over a woman who has been half packed for two years: you have been told to stay, and staying is not a resignation. It is standing still in a field somebody put you in.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and I want to say what it is not before I say what it is, because another instruction is what you've been braced for since the first line.

There is nothing here to decide. Nothing to plan, nowhere to go, no conversation you need to have with your son about the back room. Do not go looking for a next step in this, because I have not hidden one in it.

Ruth was never handed the deeds to that field. She was put in it, which is a different thing and a better one, because a field handed over can be taken back off a person, and a field God put somebody in was never theirs to hold in the first place.

So leave the mug on the side or wash it. I am genuinely not turning your evening into homework.

What is true is this. You are planted. Planted is not a word about paperwork and it is not a word about whose paint is on the walls. Ruth 2:3 has a woman standing in ground she did not pick, and the Spirit says over a box room the thing the narrator would not say out loud in the barley: this is not chance, and you are not adrift in a house full of people who love you.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is you talking yourself into a feeling of belonging. The authority in these lines belongs to Christ and it is yours, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, given to you rather than earned by settling in well. Speak them under His will and not your own, and however He answers, leave the outcome with Him. Ruth 2:3 is the ground the words stand on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a barley field off a page and puts it under a woman's feet in a back bedroom.

  1. Back room with somebody else's paint, you are not a waiting room and I am not a lodger in my own life. The Lord put a widow in a field she never chose and called that her portion, and He has put me here. I stand still in this room, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that says I am a guest now, you are not the truth about me and you do not get the last word in this house. God has never mislaid a person yet, and He did not lose me in the weekend the furniture went. I stop clearing away the evidence that I was in the room.
  3. Lord, You let the book call it chance and then You filled that field with Your own kindness before she had even looked up from the stubble. You have put me in this house and You have not made a mistake about it. Both my feet are flat on this floor, and I am standing where You set me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
