Pruned Still LovedRomans 8:1

The Key I Never Took Off The Ring

This message is for the nineteen year friendship that ended without a reason, and the fourteen months I have spent auditing myself for what I did to lose it

There is a small brass key on her ring that has not opened a door in fourteen months.

It sits between the car key and the one for the shed. Every time she picks the bunch up it turns over and catches the light, and she thinks about it for half a second, and then she puts the whole lot in her pocket anyway. She could take it off. Taking a key off a ring is a four second job. She has had fourteen months of four seconds.

Nineteen years, that key. School gates in the rain. A hospital corridor at two in the morning with two paper cups going cold on the windowsill. Four house moves. One funeral where they held each other up in the car park because neither of them could go back inside. Ten thousand cups of tea and a thousand arguments about the same television program.

And then last summer a message that was shorter than the ones before it. Then messages that came slower. Then a birthday that went past with nothing on it at all.

No row. That is the part she cannot get her hands around. If there had been a row she would have something to hold, something with edges, something she could apologize for. Instead there is a door that used to be hers and is not, and no reason attached to it anywhere.

So she has done the only thing a person can do with an unexplained loss. She has gone back through it. Every conversation, in order, twice. Was it the thing she said in the car that time. Was it that she talked about herself too much the winter her father was ill. Was it that she was too much, or not enough, or slow to reply, or the wrong kind of friend in the year she had nothing left to give anybody.

She has built a case file and she is the investigator and the accused, and she has been running that trial for fourteen months, and the verdict never comes in, so the court never rises.

And underneath it, quieter and a great deal heavier, the question she has never said out loud to a single person: what did I do that God let this go.

You are safe here. If you are carrying something with the same shape, a person, a place, a thing that was yours and is not, and you have spent a year going through your own life looking for the charge, then I want to be plain with you before we take one more step.

I am not going to explain your loss to you. I do not know why it went. Nobody honest does, and I will not invent a reason and hand it to you with God's name on it, because a reason invented is a lie wearing a kind face, and you have been hurt enough by things that sounded kind.

What I can do is tell you what it was not. And then stop.

The Key I Never Took Off The Ring

Three things it was not, and then I stop

Here is the first one, and it is the whole reason this message exists.

It was not a sentence passed on you. The audit you have been running assumes there is a charge sheet somewhere with your name at the top. There is not. That is not encouragement, it is a legal fact about your standing, and it is written down. Romans 8:1 is the sentence itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads it over a person at two in the morning.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1

Read the small words. Now. Not one day. Not after enough sorting. Now, today, in the kitchen, with the key still on the ring.

And no. Not less. Not a reduced sentence for good behavior. None. There is no condemnation available to be passed on you, which means the trial you have been running for fourteen months has been running in a court that was closed before you walked into it. You have been prosecuting a person who has already been cleared. That is Romans 8:1, and the Spirit is the one who makes an acquittal start to feel like an acquittal.

It was not anger. God has never been angry at you the way you have been angry at yourself. He is not cold toward you and He has not gone quiet on you, and the silence from a human being is not a report on how heaven feels about you. Those two silences are not the same silence, however alike they sound at two in the morning.

It was not a message. I will say this carefully, because it is where the harm gets done. What was taken from you was not sent to teach you something. I am not going to sit here and turn your loss into a lesson so it feels tidier. Some things are just lost, and the loss is a real loss, and God is not the author of a cruelty designed to improve you.

That is three. I am stopping there, exactly as I said I would.

Notice what I have not said. I have not told you it was for the best. I have not told you a better one is coming. I have not asked you to be further along than you are, or more at peace than you are, or grateful about any of it. You are allowed to still be in this. You are allowed to still want that person back. Nothing in the next five minutes requires you to be finished.

What I am taking off you is one thing only, and it is the heaviest thing you are holding. Not the loss. The case file. Scripture took that off you in Romans 8:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one lifting it now, not me.

Because here is what the searching is actually costing you. Every hour spent looking for the charge is an hour spent agreeing with an accusation nobody in heaven has made. The searching feels like humility. It feels like taking responsibility, like being the kind of person who examines herself. And underneath, it is a person slowly teaching herself that she is the sort of thing that gets left, and there is a reason, and one day she will find it.

You will not find it. Not because you are not looking hard enough. Because it is not on the sheet. There is no sheet, which is what is written, and the Spirit is not withholding the reason from you, He is telling you there is nothing there to find.

The breakthrough

You are not going to be given the reason today. I am sorry. I would hand it to you if I had it.

You are going to be given the verdict instead, and it is going to be read over you out loud, by you, in your own voice, in whatever room you are sitting in. The verdict is Romans 8:1, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a verdict off a page and into a person.

This is the turn: you stop being the prosecution. That is all. You do not have to feel differently about the person, you do not have to stop missing them, you do not have to take the key off the ring today or ever. You simply put down the file, because the court that mattered has already sat, and it did not find against you, and it never will.

If nothing shifts in your chest while you say the words, that changes nothing at all. Feelings run about six weeks behind the truth. Say it anyway.

Declare this over yourself

There is nothing to work up here. Because you are in Christ, this standing is already yours, given to you rather than earned by you, and the authority you are about to exercise is His, delegated and carried in His name. What He does about the silence, and whether that door ever opens again, is His to decide, and He may answer in His own way. What is settled in this room, right now, is what the verdict on you already says. Romans 8:1 is that verdict, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it land.

  1. Condemnation, you do not live in this house and you have never had a lease here. The Word of God says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, so the case I have been running against myself is closed by a higher court than mine.
  2. Fourteen months of looking for what I did, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus, and I am not carrying that file out of this room. God, You are the Father who has never once been angry with me, and I receive that as the plain truth about today.
  3. Father, the door is still shut and You are not the one holding it. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and Your Holy Spirit is reading that over me in this room tonight. I am loved exactly here, in the name of Jesus, with both hands open and nothing explained.
