The Floorboard You Still Listen For

This message is for the two in the morning you still wake into and listen through, though the back bedroom has been empty since February

There is a board on the landing outside the back bedroom that has creaked for forty years and nobody has ever fixed it.

Third one in from the wall. In the good years it announced children coming down for water. In the last two years it announced everything else: the walk to the bathroom at half past one, the walk back, the small pause in the middle that meant a hand had gone out to the wall for a second.

Annie learned to sleep the way a fisherman sleeps in a small boat. Not deeply. Correctly. Her body had one job through the middle of the night and it did the job well, and it did it without ever fully waking her, and that is a real skill and nobody hands out a certificate for it.

Two in the morning. Every night. Her eyes open, and before her mind is anywhere at all her ears have already gone out along the landing, past the airing cupboard, to the door of the back room.

Nothing. There has been nothing since February.

That room is empty now, and this message is not going to ask which kind of February it was. That belongs to her and it belongs to you and it is not the subject here. The subject is the ears. The ears never got the message. The ears are still out on the landing at two in the morning, doing a job that finished months ago, for a room that has nothing left to say.

She has not mentioned it to anybody. What would she even say. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is happening. She is simply awake at two, listening hard to a floorboard that is not going to creak.

The Floorboard You Still Listen For

The watch that nobody ever stood down

An army does not simply stop.

Somebody with the authority to do it says the word out loud, and the watch is stood down, and men who have been awake for a month are told in plain speech that they can sleep now. It has to be said. A body under orders does not release itself. It waits to be released, and if nobody comes and says it, it will keep standing there in the dark being faithful to an order that expired.

That is what is happening on the landing. Nothing is broken. Something is unrevoked.

Isaiah 30:15 puts it plainly: in returning and rest you shall be delivered, in quietness and trust shall be your strength. Not achieved. Given, and given as the actual mechanism rather than as the reward at the end of it. And the Holy Spirit is saying that tonight over a woman whose ears go out along a landing before her mind is even awake. You are released. The watch is over, and you have permission to sleep straight through the hour you have been guarding.

In returning and rest you shall be delivered; in quietness and trust shall be your strength.Isaiah 30:15

Read what that verse refuses to say. Isaiah 30 does not say in achieving. It does not say in pressing on, in coping well, in getting back to normal. It says returning, which is a word about a place already known, and rest, which is somewhere the body has been before. The Spirit is not sending anyone somewhere new at two in the morning. He is walking a tired woman back to something that was hers before any of it started.

And notice the order in the verse, because the order is the mercy. Deliverance is not what happens after the rest is achieved. Rest is where the deliverance lives.

I have no standing to tell a body to come off duty. Isaiah 30:15 has that standing, and His Spirit is the one who can carry a word past a mind and into a muscle, which is a distance no article ever crossed. So take it from the One with the right to say it. You are off duty. Not off duty when the sleep improves, not off duty once the hollow feeling lifts. Off duty now, at two, with your eyes open and your ears already out along the landing.

That is not my reading of your two o'clock. That is what the Spirit has been pressing into you through Isaiah 30:15 for months now, and you have been filing it under nice ideas, because nothing in the house has changed and the ears keep going out anyway. So here it is said the other way round. You are allowed to be released before you feel released. The word comes first and the body catches up afterwards, in that order, every time, and never once in reverse.

The breakthrough

Right now, in a chest that has been on alert since well before February, the Holy Spirit is doing something very quiet, and the ground He is standing on is written down and public: quietness and trust are named there as strength. Not as giving up. Not as going soft. You are not losing your edge by sleeping. You are being handed back the thing that was always meant to hold you upright.

Two witnesses have to agree before a word like this can be leaned on, and here they do. The written word says that in returning and rest there is deliverance. The Spirit of God says it into a body at two in the morning, in the only language a body understands, which is not sentences. You have both of them tonight. That is not a mood. That is a standing, and a standing does not lift when the mood does.

So the ears can come in off the landing. Not because the love is over. Because the love did its work, and the work is finished, and finished is a thing God says over a job and means.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the room where the listening happens. The standing under them is not nerve and it is not effort: it is yours in Christ, and the authority to speak them was given to you by Him. Isaiah 30:15 is the ground beneath the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them land in a body that has not believed them yet. Rest may come back tonight or it may come back slowly, and however He answers, what is true of you was settled before you woke up.

  1. Two o'clock, you are not my post any more, and that floorboard has nothing left to announce. The Lord who says that in returning and rest I am delivered has stood this watch down, and I am standing down with it.
  2. Fear of becoming a woman who stopped caring, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. I cared, and the caring was real, and it was never the listening that made it love.
  3. Lord, You are awake at two in the morning and You never once needed me awake beside You to keep this house. Your word calls quietness and trust my strength, and Your Spirit is teaching that to my hands and my shoulders tonight. I am lying back down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
